Chris leaned closer to me and glared at the door. “I don’t like this idea.”

Everly looked down at him with a soft smile. “No one knows the risk he’s taking better than Ethan. After all, should the shadow touch him and remove the gift of the wolf he will die.”

My eyes widened. “Die? Why?”

Her smile turned slightly bitter. “Because to remove the wolf from one as old as he would be to turn the clock to his true age.”

Bonnie winced. “He would turn to dust.”

Everly inclined her head. “Yes, as would many of those of us on the council.”

Chris pursed his lips. “That makes it hard to figure out who the shadow was meant for, unless it hit its target already.”

Duncan shrugged. “Maybe it wasn’t meant for anybody in particular. Maybe somebody just wanted to spread a little chaos around during the council and let the fights break out as everyone blamed everyone else for the attacks.”

Bonnie frowned at him. “Why do you always have to think up these crazy, terrifyingly possible ideas?”

He grinned. “It’s a gift.”

“You can take your gift and shove it up your-”

“If you will excuse me,” Everly spoke up as a bemused smile appeared on her lips. “I must return to the council meeting, or my husband will be forced to take my place.”

I raised an eyebrow. “You’re the member of your pack?”

“My husband and I share the duties so neither of us is too bored.” Her soft eyes settled on me. “But no matter the duties, please let me know if I can help any further.”

Chris nodded at the blue mark on me. “Is there a way to slow down the effects? Or to recognize them?”

She furrowed her brow. “The effects will be her returning to her human strength, speed, and smell. Rest, and avoiding using her werewolf abilities. The mark acts as an indicator of how much wolf power she has remaining. A bright color indicates a great deal of wolf strength.”

I set my hand atop the mark and studied it. “So, I’m mostly topped off.”

Everly chuckled. “Precisely. If you will excuse me.” She bowed her head and left us.

A few muttered words passed over Chris’ lips. “Damn it…”

“It was nobody’s fault this happened except the shadow master, so don’t beat yourself up over it,” I scolded him as I sat up and rolled down my sleeve. “Anyway, what did you guys find about the missing pixie while I was out getting touched by a living shadow?”

Chris shook his head. “Nothing. There wasn’t a trace of Freor anywhere.”

Duncan folded his arms over his chest. “Worse than nothing. Kedie ran, er, flew off to God knows where. Said it heard a noise in the bushes and wanted to follow it.”

Bonnie arched an eyebrow. “And then what?”

Duncan nodded at me. “Then we heard her yipping, and I knew something was wrong.” A smile appeared on his face as his attention turned to Chris. “I thought I was the fast wolf in this pack, but you beat me by a mile.
